Description

Officer Yuki of the Local Prefecture Police finally found the girls hanging out in a record store located in a corner of Kerorin Town. It had taken her sometime to track them down, and considering the mischief they get themselves into, she's not too surprised that they were good at keeping a low profile when they wished to. However, it was important that she find them and quickly at that too, as the City had an usual problem on their hands. One that needed the girl's special talents - 'Pest Controllers' ... after all, they've done a good job of ridding the City of most of it's oversized roaches, the occasional raccoon, a zombie and at least one dinosaur. So maybe, just maybe, they could help rid the City of it's latest unwanted denizen; a creature that can easily be described as coming from the Twilight Zone.

Officer Yuki: Thank goodness, I've found you.
Gumi: We didn't do anything ... we've been here all evening ... (but for some reason behaves rather suspiciously).
Alice: (Eyes the Officer warily, but otherwise continues to peruse the products on the shelf).
Officer Yuki: I've got a special commission for you ... interested?
Gumi: (Without skipping a beat). How much?
Officer Yuki: 100,000 yen ... but there are conditions.
Gumi: (Throws Alice a glance which is returned by a cautious nod). What conditions?
Officer Yuki: You need to keep this job really quiet, we don't want the Press getting wind of what's going on here ... it's nothing suspicious ... we just don't want to cause a panic, it's not good for business.
Gumi: Keep talking ...
Officer Yuki: Well there's this creature that prowls the City by night and it attacks people. Unfortunately, there's been several fatalities, so this creature is consider to be extremely dangerous and the Police are having problems tracking it down, so we thought maybe, you two might be able to ... exterminate this creature for us and as quickly as possible.
Gumi: Interesting, so the Police can't handle it ... (Thinks for a moment) ... this will cost you more than 100,000 yen.
Officer Yuki: Well, I've been authorized to 'negotiate' within reason. How much do you want?
Gumi: 100,000 yen and you clear all our parking tickets, or it's no deal.
Officer Yuki: Kay, how many parking tickets have you got?
Gumi: 50 something on last count ...
Officer Yuki: (Tries very hard to stifle a laugh, but manages to recover her composure in an instant). Consider it done. Just give me the tickets.
Gumi: Plus we're not responsible for any 'collateral' damage.
Officer Yuki: (Gives Gumi a hard stare for a moment). Try to minimize the damage ...
Gumi: Plus you buy us dinner first ... not ramen either ... suishi with all the fixings.
Officer Yuki: ?
Alice: On account that we're staving and can't 'work' on empty stomachs. (Giving Gumi a quick wink).
Officer Yuki: ... suishi dinner, heh? Well, I suppose ... Ok. Come along then.
Gumi: BTW, what are we suppose to be 'hunting'? Tell us whilst we're eating ...

So the three of them goes off to a suishi restaurant near the train station where the girls are given a full briefing by the anxious Officer. Officer Yuki was anxious as it was her idea to get the girls involved. She had figured that the current case was beyond the limited resources of the Local Police, who in any case, being an inner city precinct, was not particularly noted for its efficiency (except for her goodself, she would like to think).

In any case, the creature based on the description from witnesses, seemed to be something from out of an Edgar Allen Poe novel. Not something that any Police force would have been trained to handle. Some thought it might be some type of demon, others an alien, but whatever it was, it was definitely not to be taken lightly and needed to be dealt with quickly; before there were more fatalities or information about it leaked to the Press and causes a panic. Thank goodness, however, that the creature seemed only to be nocturnal.

About an hour later ...

Alice: You think this was a good idea, this job? Like this thing kills people ...
Gumi: 100,000 yen isn't chump change. Beats boxing cockroaches, which I don't need to remind you have been rather scarce lately. Besides ... (Releasing the safety catch on her M4 Carbine) ... we have plenty of firepower.
Alice: So it last attacked someone around here?
Gumi: Yep, according to Officer Yuki's information.
Alice: Be hard to track anything with all this trash around ...
Gumi: I don't think it'll be on the ground ... (Scouring the surrounding roofs)
Alice: Why do you think that?
Gumi: Cuz, when we were hunting raccoons, we did the same thing. Hunting from the rooftops where you get a better view.
Alice: So then why are we down here then?
Gumi: Because I want it to come to us ... let's look over on that side, but keep an eye on the roofs. It's out there somewhere, probably looking down at us already. Just stay near the lights so we might be able to see it if it moves.
Alice: How come you're so good at this all of a sudden?
Gumi: Just call it "Gumi's Intuition ..."

And indeed, her intuition was correct as the hunters were now all of a sudden the hunted as a nightmarish creature hungrily glares down at the two girls from a nearby rooftop ...

Alice: I think we're being watched ...
Gumi: I think so too ...
Alice: Ideas?
Gumi: Let's go over slowly to the right. There's more light on that side. Just stay in the middle of the street so it can't jump us so easily.
Alice: Kay ... (she puts her whip away and checks both her pistols) ... something's following us.
Gumi: I know, it's in the shadows watching us. We need to corner it ... see that shed over there?
Alice: Yeah ... so?
Gumi: If we wait there, it can only come at us from one direction. We can probably get a clear shot of it there when it tries to come for one of us.
Alice: You're good at this, where did you pick up these skills?
Gumi: Probably from hanging around those two bakas (she's referring to Miku and Neru) for too long. After awhile, you pick up the knack for setting up ambushes to bushwhack them. Besides, some of the roofs over there are made of corrugated iron, so I'm willing to bet it won't be able to keep completely silent ...

Gumi was correct. The creature was indeed stalking them over the rooftops just as she predicted, so it's approach was not totally silent. Plus where the two girls were waiting for it, the location they had chosen offered only a single avenue of attack for something coming at them from over the rooftops.

Five minutes later ...

Alice: (whispering) It's here, coming from my right ...
Gumi: (nods and readies her weapon).

The creature, quietly and menacingly comes into view from out of the shadows unaware of the trap that the girls had set up for it as they had chosen a spot where they knew it would have to appear and be partially illuminated by a nearby street lamp. As it peered down at the girls, the last thing it saw were the two girls aiming their guns at it with lethal intent. It did not even have time to react as the two girls opened fire with everything that they had, shattering the silence of the night with a volley of well aimed automatic and semi-automatic rounds.

Riveted with bullets, it rolled off the roof and laid quite dead at the feet of the two girls.

Alice: What on Earth is it? (Cautiously turning over the corpse with her foot, both pistols ready) ... Man, it smells really bad.
Gumi: No idea ...

She then makes two calls. One to Officer Yuki, to come and inspect the corpse so they could get paid; the second to GLaDOS who was staying over at Miku's house at the moment.

Gumi: Hi, GLaDOS, it's me Gumi. Can you come over to Kerorin Town, right now? This is important, have Miku drive you over, there's something Alice and I really want you to see ... (She takes a photo of the body with her cell phone and sends it over to GLaDOS) ...

Alice: ? ... (Looking at Gumi and expecting an explanation).
Gumi: Something tells me that this thing isn't the only one. And we need to know more about them ...
